  • In a four-hour workshop hosted by Igor, participants are invited to delve into the art of natural dyeing, an experience that intertwines the storytelling power of plants with the creativity of fabric colouring.

The workshop begins with a warm and inviting walk-in session, where participants can enjoy coffee and engage in brief self-introductions, fostering a sense of community and awareness of fellow attendees. This is followed by a video presentation where Igor shares insights into his previous work, delving into the reasons behind his project and the intricate process involved.

Participants then form small groups to commence the hands-on experience. The focus is on understanding the nuances of different types of water, mordants, and the preparation process required to optimally open up the fibers of garments for dye penetration. Using onion skins, attendees learn how to extract vibrant yellow and green hues, applying these natural colours to either their own garments (given they are made of 100% cotton or wool) or a T-shirt provided by Igor.

Igor explains both vegetable and natural dyeing techniques, using a variety of natural ingredients.

A short break includes small dishes prepared by Igor, providing an opportunity for questions, in-depth discussions about dyeing techniques, and sharing tips and tricks. Participants then engage in the exciting process of mixing their prepared clothes with the developed natural colours in a hot pan, experimenting with various effects on the fabric.

The workshop concludes with the final steps, including washing the dyed garments. Igor imparts valuable tips on how to care for naturally dyed clothes at home to preserve their colours. Attendees are encouraged to bring a small jar to take some of the dye home, extending their learning experience beyond the workshop.

    Wecandoo - Rencontrez ILANGA

    Rencontrez ILANGA

    Textile designer

Igor Ilanga's journey in the world of fashion is marked by a quiet passion and a thoughtful vision. His academic tenure at a renowned fashion academy was a period of dedicated skill refinement, culminating in a significant internship with Dries Van Noten. This experience was instrumental in shaping his perspective, but it was his intrinsic motivation that led to the establishment of ILANGA.

The name ILANGA, echoing the Zulu word for 'sun', symbolises more than a fashion brand; it represents a tranquil dawn in the industry. The ethos of ILANGA is grounded in innovation and sustainability, focusing on reviving deadstock materials through thoughtful and intentional design. The brand draws upon an array of pan-African dyeing and garment-making techniques, creating a collection that is not only visually appealing but also culturally enriched.

From an early age, Igor's connection with fashion was evident. His childhood memories of trying on his father's clothes and exploring different styles quietly informed his later work. During his academic and professional journey, Igor became acutely aware of the material wastage in the fashion industry, leading him to explore the sustainable practice of natural dyeing. This method opened up a world of understated elegance and endless colour possibilities, allowing him to connect with diverse cultures in a harmonious way.

ILANGA's serene approach extends beyond clothing design. Igor also lends his calm creativity to other designers seeking sustainable solutions and offers consultancy in the fashion industry. His approach encourages a gentle yet effective shift in product development, promoting a more mindful, environmentally conscious, and culturally sensitive perspective in fashion.
